Lately, I’ve noticed an increasing number of posts in my Instagram feed showcasing people using laser engraving in incredibly creative ways, particularly with packaging. It’s particularly interesting to me because of my past experience when I was running our print-on-demand factory, where we used epilogue engravers for all sorts of product customisation. But some of the latest applications I think are just plain clever. One that struck me was the potential for using lasers with packaging. Much of the industry uses custom labels with generic recyclable plain corrugated board. A nice application is to put a high-speed laser in line with your shipping workflow to create completely custom branding on the board. I like it because when packaging is created this way, every package seems unique. It adds value, but it’s all just driven by systems. And this means that it’s just really simple to execute and it still delivers that level of deep personalisation that we all strive for in this industry. So here’s a shout-out to the humble laser engraver. If that sort of idea sounds interesting for the sorts of workflow that you need to run in your business, reach out, ring my bell, I’d love to talk with you about it.
