In most factories that we implement a full automation solution in, there’s normally an existing investment in an MIS. So one of the common questions I get is, well, what’s the difference between an MIS and an automation solution? The answer is that an MIS typically runs at a much higher level. It tends to see the business as a whole rather than giving you deep insight into what’s happening within the different product groups at a primary, secondary and tertiary level across all the different people, different product codes, across different clients. It’s basically the difference between being able to see the business at a very precise level that automation provides, or at a series of averages or a very high-level view. The reality is that profitability can be substantially improved by executing a series of small improvements. Automation gives you the ability to find a series of 1 percent gains that put them all together and you can make a substantial impact to the profit performance of your business. So that’s what automation enables. It gives you the visibility and the granularity to see slices of your organization in a way that you’ve never seen before.
