When it comes to automation, we normally see that order processing and pre-press are the first places where automation investments are typically made by a company. Less common though is achieving 100% automation all the way onto the press. So for this week’s video, I thought I’d talk about the sorts of places where cost is most impacted through achieving 100% automation onto the press. Number one is in order processing. The goal here is no people involved whatsoever. Get in the order, processing the artwork, applying any corrections, queuing the order ready for batching and press submission, 100% automated. Second place is in automating all of the batching itself so that there’s no manual gaining of work removing all of that labor cost. The third place is in press submission, where you totally automate the release of the batches onto the press itself, all driven by business rules. That means you need less seniority in your press room, further driving cost savings. Fourthly, is if you’re running a larger press fleet, is automation lets you load balance across all of your presses, further driving down your press operator costs and achieving better press utilisation across your fleet. Put all that together and you can save potentially tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars by applying automation 100% of the way through to the press. If you’re interested in those press automation techniques, reach out, we’d love to speak with you about it.
