Two Pathways to Next-Level Kornit Efficiency

A short comparison of two automation approaches, real-time KSF generation and ColorGate + Kornit integration, for reducing manual setup in Kornit production.
  • Comparing real-time KSF generation vs ColorGate + Kornit integration as automation pathways.
  • Identifies the operational problem: manual setup files and hot-folder sequencing slow production.
  • Applies to Kornit direct-to-garment printing in print-on-demand and high-volume environments.

For years, Kornit’s direct-to-garment printers have been among the most advanced in the world – outstanding for long run DTG work. But for small batch and print on demand work a very different level of agility is required.

Today, there are two distinct pathways to unlock Kornit’s production potential — each addressing the same problem from a different angle.

Native Kornit Workflow: How it fits print on demand

Traditional Kornit workflows depend on pre-prepared KSF (Kornit Setup File) XML files. Operators manually match these instruction files with the corresponding artwork, then place them in the correct order within device hot folders. The process works — but it’s rigid. If the KSF or artwork arrives out of sequence, the print fails. For repeat jobs, that’s OK and manageable. But in a print-on-demand environment, where every order can be unique, it becomes a choke point that slows production and introduces errors.

The Real Problem: Manual Setup Doesn’t Scale

Because KSFs are created and stored in advance, every new design requires manual setup and pre-press effort. Operators must constantly prepare new configuration files for each artwork — a time-consuming and error-prone step that fundamentally conflicts with on-demand manufacturing.  Print-on-demand needs flexibility. It needs a dynamic, data-driven system that can create print instructions on the fly, adapting automatically to each incoming order.

Two Pathways to Automation

Manufacturers aiming to reach true on-demand capability have two main routes forward:

1. Real-Time KSF Generation: Intelligent Automation at the Press
This pathway eliminates manual setup entirely. Platforms like ZenSmart dynamically generate KSF files in real time. When an operator selects a job, ZenSmart analyzes the order attributes, printer model, and configuration, then instantly builds and drops the correct KSF — followed immediately by the artwork. There’s no pre-press preparation, no sequencing, and no operator intervention. It’s a fully automated bridge between order data and print-ready output.

2. ColorGate + Kornit for Enterprise Applications
For higher-volume environments, integrating Kornit presses with ColorGate RIP software creates a powerful hybrid workflow. Here, print files are processed (“RIPped”) during the picking stage rather than at the press. When the garment barcode is scanned, the file appears on-screen within a second — compared to 10+ seconds when processed live. This approach transforms speed and consistency across large-scale production environments.

The Operator Experience: Simplified by Scanning

Both pathways converge on one key interface — the barcode. Every garment carries a code; one scan triggers the full workflow. ZenSmart identifies the artwork, selects the correct print configuration, and sends it directly to the printer. Operators no longer browse folders or manage files — they simply scan and print. The result is less friction, shorter training time, and far fewer errors.

The Outcome: Kornit Devices Operating at Their Full Potential

By combining real-time KSF generation, pre-emptive RIP workflows, and barcode-based automation, manufacturers can achieve seamless print flow. Operators move from file wrangling to production oversight, while presses run continuously at full efficiency. The result: faster turnaround, fewer rejects, and a Kornit system that keeps pace with the speed of modern eCommerce.
