Reactive or Aware? (Video)

2 min read

The heart of profitability is awareness. The enemy is living in a constant state of reaction – putting out fires as they occur. There’s a lot in the concept of being in a state of Zen in running a print on demand operation. Being in complete awareness of “now”. And getting there sets you free to see the next play without day to day stress holding you back.

In this week’s newsletter, I wrote about how Zen, in our brand name, is not only just cool, but it’s also a core software design philosophy that’s part of our platform. And that’s because print-on-demand factories live in a reactive state. Every day is different, something breaks, something’s late, someone doesn’t turn up and the team scrambles to adapt to the situation. It’s basically constant firefighting. And the truth is that everybody becomes normalized to that state of firefighting. And we created Zen Smart because we wanted to challenge that. The whole concept of Zen teaches us something very different. It’s not about reacting, it’s about awareness. Complete awareness of what’s happening right now. Because in manufacturing, that awareness is power. When you know exactly where every order is, who’s working on it, how every machine is performing, you move from reacting to leading. And that’s what Zen Smart delivers, calm control in the middle of the complexity of your business. The system itself gives you the visibility, automation and insight, the three things that you need to achieve that state of Zen in production. The magic is, once you have that control, you’re free. You’re free to improve, you’re free to explore new ideas, you’re free, you know, heaven forbid to actually enjoy what you do. And that’s why we call the platforms Zen Smart. Because in the most demanding manufacturing environments, true performance doesn’t come from working harder. It comes from working in a state of calm awareness, giving you the capacity to be different tomorrow than what you are today. I hope that helps go well.
